As a Grants Associate and Storyteller at Peer Power, an educational nonprofit, I’ve witnessed the impact of effective storytelling in securing funding for our programs. My journey began in 2016 as a Success Coach tutor, working directly with the students we serve. This experience amplified my passion for sharing their stories and highlighting our programs’ impact.

In 2019, I transitioned into grant writing, quickly learning that the most compelling aspect of our applications was Peer Power’s tangible impact in the lives of underserved students and the Memphis community. By focusing on stories of academic growth, personal development, and increased opportunities, we’ve secured over $2.6 million in grant funding since 2019- a testament to the transformative power of our work.

For example, when writing a recent grant for our workforce development program, I highlighted the story of our participants, many of whom have had involvement in the justice system. Despite facing significant challenges, these students have made remarkable progress, regularly attending school, improving grades, gaining confidence and leadership skills, and earning industry-recognized credentials to prepare them for the workforce.

Storytelling puts a human face on the data and outcomes we present, allowing funders to connect emotionally with our cause and understand the tangible difference their support makes in the lives of individuals who have faced adversity. We strategically tie our stories to the grant’s goals and objectives, using data to substantiate the outcomes.

At Peer Power, we serve a diverse range of students, including those from low-income backgrounds, first-generation college students, English Language Learners, justice-involved youth, and students across the academic spectrum. We strive to tell stories that represent their unique experiences and the multitude of ways they benefit from our programs.

In addition to featuring participant stories, we also highlight the stories of our talented and dedicated program staff. By showcasing their expertise, passion, and commitment to our mission, we demonstrate to funders that their investment will be well-stewarded by a capable and caring team.

Peer Power’s vision of creating a world where all children can learn and grow, regardless of their zip code, deeply resonates with me. Throughout my time here, as a tutor and grant writer, it’s been incredibly fulfilling to see our work’s impact.

Ultimately, storytelling in grant writing creates a sense of connection, empathy, and inspiration. By inviting funders into the lives of those we serve, we build a stronger case for support and a deeper partnership in achieving our shared goals. At Peer Power, we will continue to prioritize storytelling, knowing that the stories we tell have the power to open doors, change lives, and strengthen our community, one grant at a time.
