Tom was a passionate advocate for Peer Power, instrumental in developing a sustainable model supported by Memphis’s largest post-secondary institution. His journey with us began in 2015 when he approached Charlie about supporting an initiative at the University of Memphis. Together with Dr. Nenon, they envisioned how Memphis could improve and how the university could partner with Peer Power to elevate our mission.

A Champion of Innovative Partnerships

Dr. Nenon joined the Peer Power Foundation Board of Directors in 2021, but his collaboration with the organization began much earlier, in 2015. As Provost, he recognized the unique potential of what would become known as the “Memphis Model” – a groundbreaking partnership between Memphis-Shelby County Schools, the University of Memphis, and Peer Power Foundation.

History of the Peer Power Institute

Perhaps Dr. Nenon’s most enduring contribution was his pivotal role in establishing the Peer Power Institute at the University of Memphis. Understanding the need for sustainable infrastructure to support educational innovation, he helped create an academic home for Peer Power’s work on campus.

The Institute became a center for research initiatives, program evaluation, grant management, and data analysis – all critical components that transformed Peer Power from a promising program to a data-driven, evidence-based educational model with national recognition.

A Legacy of Impact

Under Dr. Nenon’s guidance, the partnership between Peer Power and the University of Memphis flourished, creating pathways to success for thousands of Memphis youth. The UM Connect program, which bridges the gap between high school and college, exemplifies his commitment to making higher education more accessible and exciting for all students.

His work received recognition not only from the White House but also made tangible differences in homes across Memphis and beyond. The data tells the story of his impact: improved ACT scores, higher graduation rates, and the creation of sustainable career pathways for youth.

Dr. Tom Nenon was more than an academic leader; he was a community builder whose impact will be felt for generations to come. We at Peer Power Foundation are profoundly grateful for his contributions and deeply saddened by his loss.
